Tyre Deandre Nichols (June 5, 1993 – January 10, 2023) was a 29-year-old Black man with a four-year-old son who worked for FedEx and had his own website.
Nichols grew up in Sacramento, California, and relocate to Memphis in 2020. Nichols had a slim build due to Crohn’s disease, weighing about 145 lb (66 kg) and standing 6 ft 3 in, according to his family’s attorney (1.91 m).
Each of the five Black cops involved had three to six years of experience. Some were members of the SCORPION (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods), a 30-person specialized hot spot policing unit formed in October 2021 as a response team to deal with serious crimes. SCORPION officers drove unmarked cars and dressed in plainclothes, wearing bulletproof vests with the word “POLICE” written on them.
Nichols was two minutes from his home when he was stopped near the intersection of East Raines Road and Ross Road on January 7, 2023, at approximately 8:24 p.m.
